TIMING/CAM BELTS AND CHAINS
It is vital that these belts are replaced in accordance with the manufacturers recommended intervals. In a modern engine these belts maintain the synchronisation of the crankshaft and camshafts and therefore, the timing of valves and pistons, failure to replace them could result in the belt breaking. If this happens, it can cause catastrophic damage to your engine, resulting in very expensive & extensive repairs.
Your vehicle’s cam/timing belt may also drive the water pump, essential to the engines cooling system. It is industry best practice to replace this vital component at the same time and you will be advised of this when booking.
If your vehicle is fitted with a timing chain, these are generally maintenance free, however if your vehicle has not been serviced regularly this can cause premature wear/failure of the timing chain & other components.
Timing/cam belt replacement intervals vary widely depending on vehicle make & model, refer to your service book for manufacturers specified intervals. If you are unsure when your particular vehicles timing/cam belt is due for replacement, we will be happy to find out for you.
DIAGNOSTICS AND PROGRAMMING
It has now become even more important to deal with warning lights as a vehicle will fail its MOT test for most illuminated warning lights. We invest heavily in the latest diagnostic equipment, but more importantly our technicians know how to interpret the information these scans provide.
We pride ourselves on solving the problems that other garages can’t. So many clients book with us having visited other garages and paid for parts unnecessarily, the original fault not being resolved or reoccurring soon after.
Diagnosis can be time consuming and requires a level of expertise in order to investigate and correctly identify a fault, it may take 3 hours to find a fault and only 15 minutes to rectify it (for example a wire break in a wiring harness).
We know that not everyone has an endless budget, so we will always agree a limit with you and will not exceed that limit without prior authorisation.
TYRE REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR
We supply and fit premium, mid-range and budget tyre options for your vehicle. Call us today and we can advise you on a suitable tyre for your driving needs. We can also repair tyres providing they meet with British Standard AU159. Upon inspection of the tyre, our technicians will be able to advise you if your tyre falls into this category. Tyres can only be repaired in the central area of the tread, damage to the sidewalls cannot be repaired. However, before any repair is carried out, the tyre must be fully inspected for any signs of internal damage which could cause tyre failure.
RunFlat tyres are specially designed to allow you to drive for a short distance with a puncture, even when the tyre is completely flat. This is a temporary safety feature allowing the driver to get to a safe place to repair or replace the tyre. Under-inflated RunFlat tyres should not be driven above 30mph and for no longer than 50 miles. Manufacturers include markings on the tyre sidewall to identify it as a RunFlat tyre; these differ from one tyre manufacturer to another.
If your tyres don’t meet legal requirements, you could face a fine of £2,500 per tyre and 3 penalty points on your licence. Tyres with less than 1.6mm tread depth are both illegal and dangerous. When a tyre reaches 3mm, it is considered to have low tread and will be advised on a service, replacement should be considered to ensure maximum braking performance and grip is maintained, especially in wet conditions.
Tyre tread depth, condition and pressure should be checked on a monthly basis and before any long journeys, if you’re ever in doubt, we offer a free tyre safety inspection.
We can service your braking system using O.E. (original equipment) quality parts or genuine parts depending on your preference or age of the vehicle. It is vital for safety that your vehicles braking system is kept in good working condition. When getting quotes for brake repairs, ensure you find out what quality / make the parts are as you may think you are getting a bargain when in fact inferior quality parts are being used, which will affect braking efficiency and longevity, resulting in them needing to be replaced again much sooner.
Brake pad depth and brake shoe linings are checked during a routine service, if you have not had your vehicle serviced recently or have recently purchased your vehicle and are uncertain about the condition of your brakes, we would advise having your brake system serviced. This involves cleaning, adjustment & replacement of components or fluids if necessary.
One of the most overlooked aspects of the braking system is brake fluid. Brake fluid is hydroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture, once moisture gets into the brake fluid the less effective it is, and can even cause the system to fail. Brake fluid should be completely changed every two years (a key part of most manufacturers service schedules).
Allowing your brake pads to wear down completely will cause damage to your brake discs. Keep an eye out for a brake wear warning light on your instrument panel or a squealing noise to avoid unnecessary repair bills.
NOTE: Some vehicles do not have a brake wear indicator system.
AIR CONDITIONING: SERVICE AND REPAIR
Air-conditioning systems need regular attention to make sure they are working efficiently. We can investigate and rectify why your air conditioning system may not be working, or is not as cold as expected, eliminate the causes and symptoms of unpleasant odours as well as carry out the standard system recharge.
Over time, your vehicle’s air conditioning system becomes less efficient. This is due to leakage of air-con gas through the seals in the system, at a rate of approximately 10% a year. Car manufacturers recommend your air-con system is recharged with gas and lubricant every 2 years. This service is not part of routine vehicle servicing, so if your vehicle is more than 2 years old it is probably due a recharge.
Although air-con systems are used more during the hotter summer months, your system is also useful in winter. Air-con systems work by removing moisture (humidity) from the air, creating dry air which de-mists your car windscreen significantly quicker. If your windscreen does not clear effectively, the air conditioning system is most likely the cause.
Exhaust system components fail mostly due to corrosion over time; and also due to impact damage, mainly caused by speed humps and high curbs. If your exhaust system is leaking, not only will it fail the MOT, it will also be more harmful to the environment.
Exhaust systems employ a number of components to reduce harmful gases escaping into the atmosphere;
Catalytic convertors which use catalysts to convert toxic gases, via chemical reactions, to inert gases.
DPF’s (diesel particulate filters) which trap soot particles in a filter, periodically burning away the excess soot cleanly, a process called regeneration, and therefore reducing the amount of particulates released into the atmosphere.
SCR (selective catalytic reduction) systems, use a catalyst (AdBlue) that is injected into the exhaust up stream of the catalytic convertor where it hydrolyses into ammonia to aid the conversion of NOx (nitrogen oxides, extremely toxic to the environment) to harmless nitrogen gas and water vapour.
From the exhaust manifold through to the rear box and everything in-between we can resolve your issue.
A recent increase in stolen catalytic convertors, especially with certain makes and models, has left many vehicle owners out of pocket and with a vehicle that is no longer road legal. Modern cars (post 1993) are required to have a catalytic convertor factory fitted by law, in order to comply with European emissions standards. We can advise whether your vehicle model is “at risk” and provide protection such as a custom cage to discourage thieves and prevent theft.
